Robert Prevost of the U.S. is the new Catholic pontiff, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. The Chicago-born cardinal ministered in Peru and was a member of the Augustinian order.

Former Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States was selected Thursday by the papal conclave to succeed Pope Francis and lead the Roman Catholic Church. The new pontiff, who has taken the name Leo XIV,

Assumption Cemetery in Glenwood and Holy Sepulchre in Alsip, where Robert Prevost’s close relatives reside, remained peaceful Friday.

Leo urged an end to the ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. "I carry in my heart the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people," he said. "Let us do everything possible to reach a genuine, just and lasting peace as soon as possible. May all prisoners be freed and children be able to return to their families."

Since Robert Prevost is a Chicago native, baseball fans were eager to learn which baseball team the new pontiff supports.
