To drive the LEDs, [Ole] is using an Arduino. Even though the WS2812s are individually addressable and only one data pin is needed, [Ole] is using five individual data lines for this matrix.

Working together, they released a library for the Arduino to drive the strip. So far, the library only supports fading each LED, the only known functionality.

When you're done you'll have an 8x8x8 addressable LED cube that you can use for everything from simple light shows to computer-based notifications of the most LED-driven and geeky sort.
