I have compiled ok now for " generic esp8266 " after I cut and pasted the git code into the 2.3.0 folder . The download to an esp8266-01 failed and I had to copy the tools folder into the hardware ...

If you face this issue, you will not be able to compile any sketch for any ESP8266 module type.
