If the document does not open in Word, Microsoft recommends that you change the file extension of ".ASD" to ".DOC" and then attempt to open the document in Word.
Option 4: Recover from Temporary Files While you work, Word creates “.tmp” (temporary) files that you can manually search to find a copy of your unsaved document.
Look for and open a folder with the name of your document. You can open the ASD file itself in Word, or more easily click on the shortcut with the docx extension to open the recovery file (Figure G).
