With its roots in NSA intelligence gathering, Apache NiFi is about to play a big role in Internet of Things apps, says Hortonworks CTO Scott Gnau.

Hortonworks is betting big on Apache NiFi, acquiring Onyara, the commercial entity behind it, and releasing DataFlow, a separate subscription alongside the Hadoop-based Hortonworks Data Platform.

NiFi was submitted to The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) in November 2014 as part of the NSA Technology Transfer Program.
