Audio interfaces come in all shapes and sizes and commonly connect to your computer via USB or FireWire. They also have built-in microphone preamps, which amplify your mic’s signal to line level.
Look at your interface’s front and rear panels, and try to locate the MIDI connection ports. If you’ve got something like a Motu M4, you’ll find them on the rear.

Most audio interfaces I've used wouldn't be able to be used as a mixer as they route everything to/through the computer. I'm guessing there are some that might work but you'd have to read the manual!
