I find it hard to describe the Scratch “language” and programming in words (I’ve had my Lego Mindstorms robotics kit for years). The best way is to download Scratch and see for yourself.

Scratch is intended for beginners & children, It is a free, interactive, visual block based programming language that helps you learn computer programming without writing code.

It doesn't hurt that Scratch is 100 percent free to download and use, either! Kids can install it on Windows, Mac, and Linux machines after downloading from scratch.mit.edu.
