Click the button with the letter "T" on the editing bar that opens to bring up a text box that you move to the spot on the PDF where you need to add text. Double-click that text box to start typing.
In other words, Adobe Reader won't let you add text. What you need is a program that's a little more accommodating, PDF-wise. Try Foxit Reader 4.3, which allows you to add text to any PDF.
