A Romanian spammer is in part behind a sudden surge in fake Twitter followers in recent weeks. But it's not something Twitter seems to want to deal with.

Twitter has just shed light on BotMaker, a recently developed system that (as the name suggests) lets the social network create anti-spam bot code with very little effort.

Another complained they were wasting half their time blocking bots pushing gambling and crypto sites. Without getting bots and spam under control, Threads will be in the same boat as Twitter.

Bots can tweet at people, share tweets, follow and be followed by other people, among other things. Why are spam bots an issue? Mr. Musk has been voicing concern over spam bots on Twitter for years.
