One of the longest-running divides in the Minecraft community is the one between Java and Bedrock. Java is the original version of the game, while Bedrock is the Microsoft-funded rewrite in C++.

Microsoft's official announcement post also references cross-play, which would seem to imply that Java and Bedrock Edition players will finally be able to play together.

Both Minecraft Bedrock and Java Edition constantly get updates from Mojang. The company is constantly working on a popular sandbox game, releasing frequent updates to improve the gameplay experience.

Minecraft Java Edition players can only cross-play with people on the same version, which is relegated to PC, Mac, and Linux.

It's not compatible with other devices, which means Java users can't play against friends on PS4, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, or with friends who own the Bedrock Edition on Windows PC.
