Sometimes, when you try to open a Word file it fails to open and displays the following message – Word cannot open the file because the file format does not match the file extension.
Look for and open a folder with the name of your document. You can open the ASD file itself in Word, or more easily click on the shortcut with the docx extension to open the recovery file (Figure G).
Option 4: Recover from Temporary Files While you work, Word creates “.tmp” (temporary) files that you can manually search to find a copy of your unsaved document.

Once you find any Word file with the .asd extension, head back to Microsoft Word and click on the File option at the top and select the Open and Browse tabs.
