The IRS has released the vast majority of the code used to develop its Direct File program, theoretically allowing anyone to build their own versions.
According to 404 Media, the IRS published most of the code for its Direct File on GitHub, making it open source and available for others to use, much to the chagrin of tax lobbyists everywhere.
Instead of fixing the source code, it appears that the company's developers made a series of careful changes directly to the buggy program's executable file.
