Tesla offers cheaper versions of 2 electric vehicles in bid to win back market share in tough year

Tesla (TSLA) shares were in the spotlight on Thursday after a report indicated that the EV giant has registered plans for a longer-range variant of its Model Y in China. According to a Reuters report on Thursday,
Tesla has been talking about launching new “more affordable models” during the first half of the year. The first half of 2025 came and went without new, cheaper models. Instead, Tesla claimed that the “first build” of the new model was produced in June, and it will launch later this year.
In addition, Tesla ( NASDAQ: TSLA) unveiled a new price for its standard rear-wheel drive Model 3 of $36,990. While Tesla ( TSLA) topped expectations with its Q3 deliveries report, analysts do not expect that tally to be matched in the next couple of quarters due to the pull-forward of electric vehicle demand to capture the EV tax credit.
Tesla's sales of Chinese-made EVs rose 2.8% year-on-year in September to 90,812, ending a two-month decline as its new six-seater began deliveries in China, data from the China Passenger Car Association showed on Friday.
Nearly 2.9 million Tesla vehicles are under investigation by the NHTSA after reports of safety violations linked to the cars' self-driving system.
