OpenSSL isn't just used in web sites. OpenVPN, an open-source virtual private network, and older versions of the secure login and terminal program OpenSSH also use OpenSSL.

The OpenSSL program provides an open source implementation of the SSL protocol. OpenSSL can be used to encrypt actual files as well as the communication channels that transmit the files.

LibreSSL, a fork of OpenSSL, has already made “improvements” in OpenSSL programming practices according to OpenBSD officials.
