It's only Day 1 of Chicago Bears rookie mini-camp, but head coach Ben Johnson is already opening up certain positions for open competition. Johnson spoke with the media on Friday following the team's first rookie practice and indicated that the starting strong-side linebacker spot (SAM) is up for grabs among the veterans and rookies alike.

The draft selections, featuring tight end Colston Loveland, receiver Luther Burden III, offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo and defensive tackle Shemar Turner, along with the moves the team made in free agency has created plenty of depth across the Bears roster. Simply put: Johnson is giving every player an opportunity to earn their spot as a starter.
